The long-awaited redevelopment of the Connolly Barracks site in the heart of Longford town has taken a major step forward, with news this evening of a massive €7 million allocation to restore the old barracks building as a community hub.
The funding comes under the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme, which is a €90m fund to revitalise heritage buildings in Irish town centres for community use.
Longford County Council has secured 100 per cent funding for the works, which will include a new arts space, county museum and associated amenities for the county town.
Senator Joe Flaherty said: “The barracks has long been the starting point for the regeneration of the county town.
"I am certain that the funding will be transformative and importantly will bookend development that end of the town and fuel the regeneration of Lower Main St.”
