A Longford resident, who was part of the Siege of Jadotville almost sixty years ago, has expressed his disappointment that medals honouring the soldiers will not be presented by the Defence Forces.
Commanding officer Pat Quinlan recommended that 33 soldiers who survived the six-day siege in 1961 should receive either Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) or Military Medals for Gallantry (MMG).
However, the Department claims that too much time has now passed since the events and the eight surviving men will not get the honours.
They also claim an investigation in the 1960s did not recommend the men should get the medals and instead highlight that special Jadotville medals were presented in 2017.
The Minister for Defence is to be lobbied to make special dispensation for the medals to be presented. and speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show, Micheál Tighe said the men deserve to be honoured:
