The figures were released to councillors at a meeting of Athlone-Moate M.D. this week.

An Athlone councillor believes the local authority's projected housing figures don't meet the demand on the ground.

Westmeath County Council anticipate the delivery of 524 housing units in the Athlone-Moate Municipal District between now and 2026.

Some of the approved projects and units are located in Arcadia, Bellaugh, Lissywollen, Cornamaddy and Dun na Ri in Coosan.

Councillor Paul Hogan believes the anticipated delivery is not enough with over 600 people currently on a social housing waiting lists and a high number of people seeking emergency accommodation.

He says of the 524 projected units within the next five years 280 will be affordable housing.

Following a council meeting this week, the independent councillor called for a meeting with the director of housing to address the issue.

''It doesn't meet the needs that are on the ground because if you look at the number of Ukrainian families that are coming and will be looking for accommodation, and also the large number of local families who are in need of housing provision, obviously there's be more houses provided privately but the problem with that is a number of sites have closed because of the negative impact of inflation and the cost of materials.''
