The student will get to meet her fellow Councillors for the first time in person later this month

Roscommon County Council's youngest member hopes to work to represent people of all ages and genders in her time on the local authority.

Emer Kelly was today co-opted to fill the vacancy which resulted from the resignation of Ivan Connaughton last month.

A special meeting of the local authority this morning welcomed the health student as a member following her official proposal by Cathaoirleach of the Council Laurence Fallon, which was seconded by Councillor Tony Ward.

Councillors expressed their good wishes to Ms Kelly, and also expressed their delight that a young female was to take a role on the Council.

The 21-year-old told the meeting that she hopes to work with community groups to improve the quality and spirit of areas and she also paid tribute to her predecessor, describing him as someone who had contributed immensely to local communities in south Roscommon.

The Council expects to have a physical meeting for the first time this year for its May meeting later this month.
