Leitrim woman encourages people to get involved in sowing oat seeds project

She is trying to bring people back to their rural roots by sowing oat seeds

A Leitrim woman is encouraging people to sow oats seeds in order to reconnect with the life of our rural ancestors.

Edwina Guckian has carried out research into the customs and folk tradition of Ireland associated with straw.

The Sowing the Seed project which is now beginning again aims to bring strawing traditions, harvest knots and strawboy costumes making into the modern day.

She says the interest in getting involved in the project in Leitrim has been high.

'All that people need to do is to come along to locations dotted around Leitrim that's available on our website to design their own straw costumes'

Edwina will distribute the seed throughout County Leitrim on Wednesday March 22nd at the following locations.

The seeds will then be sown and harvested in the Autumn when a number of events including workshops and the mummering tradition will take place.
