New restrictions have been implemented by Irish Rail since the start of the pandemic.

A Leitrim rail user believes an alcohol ban on trains must be better policed going forward.

Oonagh Monaghan's call comes following a recent experience on board the Dublin to Sligo Service.

She says passengers engaged in anti-social behaviour having consumed a large amount of alcohol.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail says alcohol is not permitted on board, a measure which was introduced during COVID-19 restrictions.

They say security will confiscate any alcohol on board the train.

However, speaking to Shannonside FM Oonagh believes this should be enforced properly on all services.

''Certainly if somebody's getting very loud and carrying on, I do think that they should be taken off or the alcohol taken away but I think from the ticket inspectors point of view, how can one person face a group of four or eight people who are drinking? I think that's impossible. I really think that if they're thinking about doing this seriously, they might have to have security people and that's getting completely out of hand then.''
