The calls come as the number of people in hospitals with COVID has increased in the last week.

Over 600 people are in hospital with Covid, an increase of over 200 in one week.

A triple wave of viruses has resulted in the healthcare system being under extreme pressure.

As well as increased Covid hospitalisations, 300 patients have the flu and 250 children are in hospital with RSV.

Dr. Greg Martin, Director of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, is urging people to wear masks in busy settings and when on public transport.

"Even if you're a young and healthy person and you're not worried about getting seriously ill because you've got a good immune system and you don't have an underlying condition, the onus is still on all of us to stop the spread of these illnesses because you never know who's sitting next to you on the Luas. That person might be pregnant, they might have an underlying condition or they might live with someone who has a condition so it is incumbent on all of us to do what we can".
