Homeless charity hopes for significant development of housing units in Longford

It's hoped to turn various empty buildings into homes for people living on the streets.

One of the country's largest homeless support groups is appealing to businesses and the public in Longford to come together to help ease issues facing rough sleepers in the region.

The Peter McVerry Trust has launched a new 5 year strategic plan to deliver 1,200 New Social Housing Units nationwide including a special focus on local authorities in Longford, Westmeath and Cavan.

The Housing First Scheme will see hundreds of single unit homes created from vacant properties with a major focus on renovating derelict commercial and public buildings into residential units with the cooperation of local councils.

CEO of the Peter McVerry Trust, Pat Doyle says they have transformed vacant banks, schools and offices into new single unit residencies for rough sleepers.

He says there are opportunities for significant development in Longford.
