Government urged to address major overcrowding at Portiuncula Hospital

Hospitals across the region are facing increased trolley numbers of non-Covid patients.

The Government is being urged to deliver on their promise of increased bed capacity for Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, following reports of significant overcrowding today.

According to trolley watch figures from the INMO, 27 people are currently waiting for beds at the facility.

Local TD Denis Naughten says the hospital has lost 10 per cent of its bed space over the last year and a half due to Covid regulations.

The Independent TD says while Government has allocated funds for hospitals to increase their capacity, the beds are not being delivered.

Elsewhere in the Region, Sligo University Hospital and UHG are both facing significant waiting lists for beds this afternoon.

According to Deputy Naughten, the Minister for Health must intervene immediately:
