Government to consider calls to abolish sub-minimum wage

At the moment people under the age of 20 can be paid less than €11.30 an hour.

The Public Expenditure Minister says the government will consider calls to abolish the sub-minimum wage.

At present people under the age of 20 can be paid less than the minimum rate of 11 euro 30 cent.

The Union of Students in Ireland and Mandate Trade Union have both called for a change, with Mandate calling the current system discriminatory.

Minister Paschal Donohue says they'd consider it, if it encouraged younger people to enter the workforce.
