Gardai in Athlone are making enquiries after a fatal dog attack in Burgess Park in Athlone town at the weekend.

The incident is said to have happened on Saturday afternoon around half past two as a collie dog was being walked by its owner in the park.

Two other dogs who were in the area attacked the collie, and it sustained fatal injuries in the incident.

Gardai say the two dogs were surrendered after the incident and are now with the relevant authorities. Local animal welfare activist Billy Gallagher says the incident shows the need for everyone to know where their dogs are at all times:

"You've got to keep your own dog on your property, gates closed and make sure they can't get out.

It's not only that dogs might attack but they could get killed in traffic as well.

Only a few days ago we had a dog that got a clip of a car but he wasn't badly hurt and he wasn't killed but we got him back to his owner and the owner had left the dog out the gate and off down the town he went, he was found two miles away.
