An Garda Síochána have provided details of a new operation to target anti-social behaviour and criminality in Longford town.
Operation Phoenix will be rolled out from the beginning of October, and will involve a Garda on the beat every day in the town centre.
Garda Inspector Frank Finn says they want to generally target the Ballymahon St, Main St and Dublin St areas.
He says officers will be monitoring for offences including double parking, anti social behaviour, theft from shops, public order offences, loitering, cycling on footpaths and the in appropriate use of motorised scooters to try to improve the quality of life of people who want to use the town centre.
Inspector Finn said they want to get back to it being normal to see a Garda out on the beat as opposed to people getting a shock when they see a yellow jacket on patrol.
All interactions under Operation Phoenix will be recorded and statistics will be made available to the Joint Policing Committee in future.
