Future students at Athlone Institue of Technology will be able to design a programme from a range of course modules available from a range of European universities.

The consortium between AIT and Limerick Institute of Technology, which are working towards technological university status, has been successful in its application to join a new alliance to increase collaboration between Europe's universities.

The European Universities Network aims to create a centralised European Education Area and will enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in multiple EU countries.

Inclusion in the network will also increase AIT's competitiveness in terms of attracting research and innovation funding.

While the project will not be fully completed until 2022, Dr Niall Seery, project director for the AIT - LIT Consortium says the benefits for students and the region have already begun.
