Former RTÉ news presenter Bryan Dobson said he was happy to be super sub for the Irish President last night as he officially opened Boyle Arts Festival. The veteran broadcaster revealed Michael D Higgins had been approached by the organising committee but was forced to decline the invitation. The outgoing President previously opened the festival in 1993 as Minister for Arts and Culture.
The popular festival features over 60 events this year and will take place in the north Roscommon town over the next ten days. Addressing the large crowd in attendance, Bryan Dobson said he didn't hesitate when asked if he'd launch the event:
