There has been controversy for some months over the fact that Fr Hughes has continued to say mass at the church in Cavan with people in attendance despite the Covid regulations

Gardaí issued a number of fines yesterday as protestors travelled to Mullahoran in Cavan in support of the local parish priest.

Fr PJ Hughes who's originally from Mount Temple in Moate was fined by Gardaí last week as he has continued saying mass with people in attendance during the level five restrictions.

He told Shannonside Northern Sound that he will not pay the fine.

Gardaí yesterday mounted checkpoints on roads approaching the church in a bid to foil protests planned by campaign groups.

Mass went ahead at the Cavan church but Gardaí issued a number of fines to people who had travelled more than 5km from their homes.

People from as far as Leitrim and Roscommon were stopped by Gardaí close to the church yesterday.
