Funding will then be sought by Westmeath County Council for the improvement works following the submission of the report.

Consultants have been appointed to carry out an environmental report on the future development of Portlick in Athlone.

That's according to Councillor John Dolan who believes it's important a conservational management plan is produced before further enhancing the popular amenity.

The wooded area currently boasts walking and horse trails as well as a campsite and it's hoped the strategy will be complete within the next 12 months.

Speaking to Shannonside FM Councillor Dolan says the importance of Portlick was highlighted during the pandemic.

''We want the right advice as to how to bring this amenity on without destroying the amenity we have, that's really why this work is a going on. It will the majority of the year to complete but I think it's well worthwhile because when we have this in our hand, we can go to a different departments to look for funding to do work out there.''
