A 72-year-old man has been handed a suspended three-month jail term for stealing t-shirts worth a total of 70 euro from

A 72-year-old man has been handed a suspended three-month jail term for stealing t-shirts worth a total of 70 euro from a clothes shop in Roscommon last year.

The elderly man, who appeared in court with a crutch and his nephew who translated proceedings stole four Tommy Hilfiger tops in February 2019.

Roscommon District Court heard that the man went into the shop, picked up the clothes walked out of the shop, got into a car and left the scene.

Gardai subsequently arrested the man in March and he pleaded guilty to the offences.

Judge Alan Mitchell heard that the pensioner, who was described as very immobile has 29 previous convictions, including 25 for theft.

He was fined 100 euro and given a three month jail term, suspended for 18 months.
