Capacity at the Athlone campus for apprenticeship courses has been almost doubled

A new 4 million euro apprenticeship facility has been opened at TUS Athlone by Minister Simon Harris.

The state of the art centre will create capacity for up to 1000 apprentices a year, almost doubling its current offering.

The expansion allows for an increase in the type and number of apprenticeship programmes at the local university which includes electrical apprenticeships for the first time in the midlands.

It will also offer consortium led apprenticeships which looks at sectors like Insurance and Technology.

TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane says students can go onto PhD level through the newly launched programmes.

'That sort of traditional end point for apprenticeships is now gone as well in a number of the trades,

You can go to PhD level now through that apprenticeship programme, where the new consortium led  apprenticeships are in place.

We're working with a lot of industry so when I say  about 'consortium', that's the industry itself , so it's not the Technological University of the Shannon saying "we need an apprenticeship in this space", it's the industry saying "we need an apprenticeship in this space because we have a demand for this type of apprentice."
