It follows claims from a Fianna Fáil TD, following a collision between his vehicle and a deer, that the deer population in Ireland is out of control and culling needs to continue.

A Roscommon resident is arguing that deer are not the root cause of road traffic collisions, but rather humans.

Her comments come following claims from Fianna Fáil TD, Jackie Cahill, that the deer population in Ireland is out of control.

The deputy made the claims following a collision between his vehicle and a deer recently.

Over one thousand deer were culled in the Shannonside region in the past 12 months, 646 in Roscommon, 358 in Leitrim, and 111 in Longford,

Iris Cudd, who lives in the Boyle area and also had a collision with a deer, says that animals should not be blamed for the accidents.

"I saw a female deer run into the road. I managed to slow down and she ran across the road but unfortunately her little one came down the hill and ran into the side of my car. I don't blame the deer, I blame man. What we're doing is cutting across their breeding grounds and the poor things don't know what to do. Collisions between cars and deer have been going on for years, and there's never been a fatality".
