Danny Grant of Bohemians has been named SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for August.

After returning from the prolonged break caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Bohs won all four of their Premier Division matches in August to announce themselves as title challengers in what will be a shortened 2020 campaign.

“I’m absolutely buzzing with the award,” the winger said, “particularly as it’s my first time to win it.”

20-year-old Grant has been a key player for Keith Long’s side, netting the winner against Finn Harps and also getting on the scoresheet in a 2-1 victory over Dundalk.

“Goals were something that I needed to add to my game,” he admits. “I spoke to Keith and Trevor [Croly] at the start of the year and both agreed that my performances were good but that my end product could be better.

“We’ve worked hard over the break, doing a lot of crossing and finishing. I don’t think I was getting into the right areas enough so they also helped me with my positioning.”

A 1-0 Dublin derby defeat to leaders Shamrock Rovers means Bohs sit five points back in second place with just eight matches remaining.

“We can only look after ourselves,” Grant added. “That’s the message from our coaches and we won’t be paying attention to anybody else.

“We’re just aiming to bounce back against Waterford after the loss last week, so that’s all we are concentrating on right now.”

Ronan Coughlan of Sligo Rovers finished second in the voting, while Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes was third.
