A Longford intellectual disability service says a 10 million euro funding allocation is a drop in the ocean of what is required to address impact of COVID-19.
St Christopher's services in Longford supports 141 adults and their families through residential and day care.
Due to Covid 19, it has had to reallocate 12 staff from its day care to residential services, and is running at 55 per cent capacity compared to before the pandemic.
This has meant many families and carers who may themselves be older and vulnerable have had to continue to provide full time care without any respite.
It would cost €575,000 euro to replace the staff for day services alone and that doesn't take into account the need to acquire extra space or resources.
Chairman of St Christopher's Services, Derek Scanlon says it's a very difficult situation for families and the government needs to look again at the figures provided by services.
