Co. Leitrim centre for people with disabilities receives positive HIQA report

An unannounced inspection was carried out at Shannon Quay residential centre in March.

A county Leitrim centre for people with disabilities has received a largely positive report from the health watchdog. An unannounced inspection was carried out at Shannon Quay residential centre in March. Shannon Quay provides residential and respite care to five male and female adults with intellectual disabilities, with up to four residents receiving overnight care at any one time. Inspectors found that residents were receiving person-centred care in a warm and homely environment. Residents appeared happy, relaxed and comfortable in their home, and staff were observed treating them with dignity and respect.

The overall quality of care was described as positive, with inspectors noting that residents' rights and wellbeing were being promoted. However, the inspection identified areas requiring further improvement. These included strengthening governance and management systems to ensure issues are identified and addressed more consistently. Inspectors also said some auditing systems needed to be more effective in identifying and following up on issues in a timely manner. Overall, Shannon Quay was found to provide a good quality service. A compliance plan outlining how those improvements will be achieved has been requested by the Chief Inspector.
