The Minister for Agriculture has taken on board concerns of local farmers in respect of loss of income following last months bogslide in Drumkeeran.

Tonnes of peat slid down the Shass Mountain above the Dawn of Hope Bridge, which was covered and damaged by the event on June 29th last.

Acres of farmland have also been covered by the peat and the local authority is today beginning an operation to clear a number of blocked roads.

Minister Barry Cowen spent over two hours in the area this morning, meeting local farmers, politicians and engineers from Leitrim county Council,

He stated that agencies, including the OPW, local engineers and Coillte will have to work together to assess the area and provide a solution.

The Minister was asked to provide a hardship fund for farmers the loss of income as a result of lands now submerged, and also that their eligibility for farm payments would not be affected.

Local Fiann Fail Councillor Mary Bohan says Minister Cowen didn't make any promises, but said he will look into it.
