Ballymahon residents are urging visitors to the area to respect the current Covid-19 level 5 movement restrictions.

The call follows a significant increase in numbers travelling to amenities in the area from outside of their 5 kilometres exercise limit.

Longford Garda fined over 30 people and warned 70 others at Newcastle Woods outside of the town yesterday, for breaching the current health restrictions.

Nationally 170 people were fined and 400 received cautions in Wicklow for breaking the travel limit over the weekend.

Ballymahon area councillor and resident Pat O'Toole says residents are worried that the increased crowds from across the region are risking spreading the virus.

The Fianna Fáil councillor says while they'll welcome crowds once the restrictions are lifted, now is not the time.
