Lough Ree is in danger of losing its reputation as one of the finest wild mixed fisheries in Europe. That's according to Athlone man

Lough Ree is in danger of losing its reputation as one of the finest wild mixed fisheries in Europe.

That's according to Athlone man Martin McEnroe who is currently serving as President of the Angling Council of Ireland.

He is reacting to the news this week that an invasive species of fish has re-appeared on the River Inny in Longford.

Speaking today on the Let's Talk show Martin McEnroe says studies carried out in recent years show 40% of its fish stock comes from the River Inny and another 40% from the Camlin River.

He says the renewed threat from the presence of the invasive chub species of fish on the Inny, coupled with problems at the fish pass in Tarmonbarry, and with the weir wall in Athlone, means the lake is in danger of losing a huge amount of its fish stock…
