15% rise in calls to Athlone domestic violence refuge

The centre also runs a 24 hour helpline.

An Athlone based Domestic Violence refuge is recording a 15% increase in calls so far this year.

Esker House provides temporary safe accommodation and support for women and their children experiencing domestic abuse.

Manager of the facility Deirdre Barry says she's concerned with the high level of calls and believes tragedies such as the killing of Ashling Murphy in Tullamore have shone a light on the issue.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Deirdre Barry said a full Government response is required to tackle the domestic violence problem.
