The needles, believed to have been discarded by drug users, were found in the Battery Bridge area of the town.

Over 140 used hypodermic needles were discovered during a community clean-up in Athlone.

The needles, believed to have been discarded by drug users, were found in the Battery Bridge area of the town.

The clean-up was carried out by Community Employment Scheme workers, who said the needles were discarded in a bush at College Park.

Workers claim the area is known to have been frequented by drug users in the past.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show earlier, John Stroud, who was part of the clean-up, said drug use is an ongoing issue in the area:
