A five-point victory for Michael Glaveys shocked St. Brigids as they topped their Roscommon SFC group.
A defensively solid showing kept St Brigid’s to just three scores in the second-half writes Matthew Towey.
Bobby Nugent opened the scoring after a minute of play for St Brigid’s. Michael Glaveys responded quickly when Dylan Ruane fired over before Cathal Heneghan registered the opening two-point score of the contest.
Ciaran Sugrue and Shane O’Malley traded further scores as Michael Glaveys led by two points, four points to two, after a hard-fought opening 10 minutes.
Robbie Dolan saw an effort well saved by Glavey’s keeper Cormac Hengehan, before Shane Cunnane fired over the subsequent 45.
Glaveys were looking defensively compact and making life difficult for St. Brigid’s who then hit a purple patch of their own.
Three consecutive from Daniel Hagney and Robert Henghan extended their lead to four points after 17 minutes of play.
Brigid’s hit back with points from Ruaidhri Fallon, Bobby Nugent and Brian Stack as they went in search of the leveller before half-time.
Tiernan Murphy broke the Brigid’s scoring streak with a point of his own. Indeed, Shane Cunnane fired over another 45 to bring the first half proceedings to a close.
At half-time Michael Glaveys led by one point, eight points to seven.
A heavy mist descended on Lisnamult for the second-half, the opening score was 10 minutes in the making.
Cathal Heneghan and Connor Hussey got a point each inside two minutes as Glaveys extended their lead again.
Eddie Nolan fired over a two pointer as Brigid’s were up and running for the second-half on 46 minutes, now only trailing by one point.
Michael Glaveys now looked the more comfortable, took control again after points from Daniel Hagney and Dylan Ruane; extending their lead to three with 55 minutes.
Brigids fight back
St. Brigid’s reduced the lead to one point with under two minutes remaining. Through two quick-fire points from Shane Cunnane and Ben O’Carroll.
Michael Glaveys whose lead now appeared to be under pressure at this point, worked the ball well down field with the end result been Cathal Heneghan winning a free. Robert making no mistake in firing over.
St Brigid’s struck the post with a two-point effort in the dying minutes of the contest, before Glaveys broke with a counterattack.
