A 19-year-old local party representative is calling for the reduction of the voting age to be given serious consideration.
It comes as Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly introduced a bill to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.
Speaking at the Dáil, the TD said young people were being 'unjustly restricted' in democratic participation, arguing that sixteen-year-olds are as civically informed as their peers aged eighteen or over.
Countries like Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Scotland, Wales and Greece have all lowered their voting age from 18.
