A local MEP has congratulated Donald Trump on his US election win but says she has 'serious concerns' about his policies.
Maria Walsh says she fears his views and policies could negatively impact women, minority and marginalised groups in society.
The Midlands Northwest MEP also expressed concern that his actions in office may influence others around the world.
She added that following Donald Trump's return to the White House, the EU could now be a beacon of hope for global democracy.
Walsh, who holds both Irish and American citizenship, said she'd no doubt the historic bond between both countries would remain strong.
Speaking to Shannonside News, however, she said Trump's election is an opportunity for the EU to strengthen its influence globally.
