America's 'self sabotage' of it's economy through tariffs and ongoing trade conflicts will severely affect local businesses according to a Sinn Fein TD. Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny described ongoing moves by the Trump administration as both an impending massive blow to the American people, but one that will affect many SMEs in the Shannonside region. The party's agriculture spokesperson has joined those who've highlighted the risk to local businesses such as the Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo from tariffs in the US.
The Leitrim distillery has a major market in the United States, where it exports gin and whiskey. Despite the 90 day pause in the tariffs, it's feared the US administration may increase the taxation should the EU retaliate. Speaking in the Dail, Deputy Kenny called for the Government to take steps to protect the Irish economy and jobs:
