Roscommon has done its 'fair share' when it comes to providing a safe haven for those fleeing war. That's the view of Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice, who has called on the Government to 'step up' when it comes to refugee accommodation.
His comments follow the passing of a deadline for observations regarding proposed accommodation for asylum seekers in Roscommon town. An application has been made to An Bord Pleanala to house those seeking International Protection at a property on Goff Street.
Noel Whelan made the application on the 14th of April seeking a planning exemption for the former Roscommon Champion building, known as Academy House. The deadline to the submission of observations passed at 5.30 yesterday evening with An Bord Pleanala expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says Roscommon has been 'to the fore' when it comes to welcoming refugees. He claims private entities have profited due to Government inaction on the issue:
The Independent TD was also critical of the process of identifying refugee accommodation and said there was an information vacuum:
A number of public representatives, including local councillors Marty McDermott and Larry Brennan, have so far declined to comment on the matter in Roscommon town.
