A Roscommon councillor has welcomed clarity around the awarding of Civic Receptions by the local authority.

Cllr Laurence Fallon says there had been cases in the past where non-Roscommon residents were excluded from the honour.

He claimed members of successful sports teams were not included in the past due to the fact they lived outside the county.

The issue was raised at this week's meeting of Athlone Muncipal District meeting.

The council executive said all members of a successful team were considered part of the reception.

At the meeting, Cllrs Emer Kelly and John Keogh proposed receptions for the Roscommon senior hurlers and Taughmaconnell U-12 girls' soccer team respectively.

Roscommon won the Nickey Rackard Cup earlier this year while Taughmaconnell are All-Ireland Community Games champions.

Cllr Fallon says it was important that anyone representing a successful Roscommon-based group be acknowledged.
