Former Roscommon mayor and veteran councillor, Michael McGreal, has confirmed he wants to take Gareth Scahill's vacant council seat.
He's one of four candidates vying for the position.
Castlerea man Gareth Scahill was elected as a councillor in the Roscommon Local Electoral Area last June.
But his time on the council was short-lived as he was appointed to the Seanad by the Taoiseach in February.
His council seat has been vacant for the past six weeks or so.
Fine Gael is holding a selection convention in Tully's Hotel in Castlerea on April 14th, when local party members will choose his replacement.
The deadline for nominations is this Sunday night.
Already there are four confirmed candidates - Roscommon's Robbie McConn, Castleplunkett's Ruth Connolly-Conboy, Ballinlough's Michael McGreal and Ballintubber solicitor Maria McCahill
McGreal was a councillor for around 30 years before losing his seat in 2014.
Robbie McConn, an unsuccessful local elections candidate last June, lives in Roscommon town - he disagrees.
Party members will decide which candidate to back in just over two weeks' time.
