Polling stations have opened across the Shannonside region as voting gets underway in the presidential election. There are three candidates on the ballot paper - Independent Catherine Connolly, Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys and Fianna Fáil's Jim Gavin. In County Leitrim, 64 polling stations are operating, with 25,506 people eligible to vote as part of the Sligo-Leitrim constituency. Votes from there will be counted at the Mercy College in Sligo town. There are 58 polling stations open in Longford, while in Westmeath, 118 stations are serving voters across the county with 103,609 eligible voters. Counting for that constituency takes place at the John McCormack Hall at TUS in Athlone.
While in Roscommon-East Galway, there are 124 polling booths, with 49,275 and 11,003 people respectively on the electoral register. Roscommon town's Hyde Centre will host the count in the Roscommon-East Galway constituency. Polling stations will remain open until 10pm tonight. Following this, ballot boxes will be sealed and transported to counting centres with counting to commence at 9am tomorrow morning.
