Over 1,000 students in the Shannonside region left school without doing the Leaving Cert in the space of five years. Almost half of them were in Co Longford. These figures were sought by Independent TD for Dublin Bay North, Barry Heneghan. He asked the Education Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, about the number of students who left secondary school before doing the leaving cert in the past five years. In response, Minister Naughton provided figures. They show 1,055 students in the Shannonside region, who started secondary school between 2014 and 2018, left before doing the Leaving Cert - 216 in Leitrim, 495 in Longford and 344 in Roscommon.
