Opening of improved N4 route 'bittersweet' day for road safety action group

The 15km stretch took just over two years to complete.

A north-west road safety campaigner says the opening of a major improvement to the N4 is a bittersweet occasion.

The stretch between Coolooney and Castlebaldwin was once described as the most dangerous road in Ireland with a local action group erecting 29 white crosses to mark the tragic loss of life on the single carriageway to highlight their cause.

The 80 million euro project is one of the largest of its kind in the country that aims to make the route safer and more efficient.

Bernard Mulhearn is a founding member of the N4 Action Group who pressured the government and local authority to upgrade the section of road with work beginning in 2019.

He says that today's road opening brings mixed emotions :
