No new Covid health restrictions recommended by CMO

Members of the public are being urged to be cautious over the Christmas period when it comes to social contacts.

No new restrictions were recommended by the chief medical officer when he met government party leaders last night.

But Dr Tony Holohan did outline his serious concern about how rapidly the Omicron variant is taking hold here.

It now accounts for about 14 per cent of new Covid cases - and NPHET will consider the situation further when it meets tomorrow.

Beaumont Hospital consultant, Bill Tormey, says new research from South Africa suggests Omicron is not as bad as feared.
