Almost 1,000 vehicles were seized in the Shannonside region last year for having no insurance.
There were 748 in Longford, Roscommon and Mayo - and 246 in Leitrim and Sligo.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan says gardai can now check if a vehicle's insured through the Garda Mobility App.
