Minister advises parents to contact SENO over Athlone school places

The Minister for Special Education it was preferable for students to get a place close to home.

An advocacy group for children with Autism in Athlone is calling for more school places to be made available within the town.

Athlone Autism Parents group say while a new unit has been approved for the Community College several students with additional needs are being forced to travel to nearby towns for a place.

The Minister for Special Education is advising parents in Athlone to contact the SENO support service.

Josepha Madigan says the Special Education Needs Officer is best placed to inform parents of where places are available and works closely with all schools.

Speaking to Shannonside FM the Fine Gael TD acknowledged it was preferable for students to get a place close to home but insists this is not always possible.
