A man accused of raping an elderly woman in Longford has been sent forward for trial in the Central Criminal Court.
The man, who is in his 30s, faces seven charges.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim, faces seven charges, including one count of rape under section 48 of the Offences Against a Person Act, 1861, and two counts of rape under section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990.
He was further charged with one count of theft of €25 from the victim, trespass with intent to rape the woman, attempted rape of the victim and sexual assault.
He appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at Longford District Court this morning, where Garda Declan O'Grady gave evidence of serving the book of evidence prior to his attendance in court.
Sergeant Enda Daly said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented for the accused to be sent forward for trial at the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
It is alleged that the rapes occurred on February 25th, 2025, at the home of the victim.
The accused was unemployed and on social welfare at the time.
Michelle Reynolds, for the accused, indicated there would be no bail application at this time, but applied for legal aid to cover both a junior and senior counsel to represent her client in court.
Judge Owens approved the request and gave the accused an alibi warning, and remanded him in custody by consent to the ongoing sittings of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
