Plans by the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel resort in Doonbeg, west Clare, to build a new ballroom have been delayed following an objection from a Longford resident.

A County Longford journalist has explained why he questioned US President Donald Trump about snails during a visit to the Oval Office.

Liam Madden, of Convent Road, has lodged separate appeals with An Coimisiún Pleanála against two planning permissions granted by Clare County Council last month.

The approvals relate to the proposed permanent ballroom as well as a series of additional upgrades at the west Clare resort.

In his submission, Mr Madden also raised concerns about what he described as a significant deterioration in the population of the 2mm Vertigo angustior snail at the site.

Killoe native Brian Mahon said the unusual question was intended to highlight the issues surrounding the proposed development:
