Longford County Council is urging the public to dispose of dangerous waste items or chemicals the responsible way by attending a collection day in the town this weekend.
Members of the local authority Environments Department will be at Pearse Park GAA lower car park from 10am to 1pm.
Paints, old medicines, weed killers, batteries and waste oil are just some of the items that can be safely disposed of on the day.
Environmental Officer with Longford County Council, Gary Brady, says these items can cause a very real risk of danger to young children, pets and wild animals.
Speaking to the Let's Talk Show today, he warned that dumping the items can also cause severe damage to the local environment and watertable.
"This is the reason we started the collection, is because we were starting to find this stuff dumped out along roadsides and dumped in rivers and streams and it's extremely hazardous to local biodiversity, to young kids playing in the area, and vegetation. S this is a good way to ensure it doesn't end up in the wrong place and it can't be become a pollutant or dangerous to young people, or to animals and wildlife".
