Longford Cllr remembered as 'trailblazer' for women in local politics

Former Fine Gael councillor Maura Kilbride-Harkin passed away last Thursday at the age of 83.

Longford's first female mayor is being remembered as a 'trailblazer' for women in local politics. Former Fine Gael councillor Maura Kilbride-Harkin passed away last Friday at the age of 79.

She served in the Granard local electoral area from 1985 to 2009, and in 1995 she became the county's first ever female county council chairperson. Her funeral mass will take place tomorrow at 1pm at St. Mary's Church in her native Granard. Fine Gael councillor Peggy Nolan says she was a proud ambassador for Longford wherever she went:
