Locals facing bank closures urged to consider alternative institutions

Several Bank of Ireland branches will shut tomorrow.

A Roscommon councillor is asking people to consider opening accounts in their local post office or Credit Union if their local bank branch is closing.

Councillor Valerie Beirne was speaking ahead of the closure of 88 Bank of Ireland branches around the country tomorrow.

The closures were announced earlier this year with the bank pointing to a decline on footfall at branches and the rise in digital banking as two main reasons that made the shutting of the branches inevitable.

Five branches in Elphin, Strokestown, Granard, Drumshanbo and Manorhamilton will close their doors for the last time tomorrow.

Councillor Beirne says a lot of older people are being badly let down with the closures, and she hopes that people will try to keep some of the accounts in the local areas.
