As the results of the presidential election becoming clearer, local TDs Martin Kenny (Sinn Féin) and Frank Feighan (Fine Gael) have reflected very different tones toward the outcome.
With Independent candidate Catherine Connolly set to be elected President, Martin Kenny welcomed the result as a positive shift in Irish public life.

While his Sinn Féin did not run its own candidate directly, he said the party’s decision to support her was vindicated by the result.

Speaking to Shannonside FM at the count centre in Mercy College, Sligo, Deputy Kenny outlined that voters are sending a message about representation:

For Frank Feighan, the result represents a disappointment for Fine Gael, given that its candidate Heather Humphreys was unsuccessful.
In his reaction, Deputy Feighan acknowledged the strength of his opponent’s campaign and congratulated Catherine Connolly on her impending victory:
