A local GP and government TD says maternity services must not close down completely in Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe. It was announced yesterday pregnant women deemed "high risk" will have their care transferred from Portiuncula to other hospitals. External reviews into the care of women and babies at the hospital continue.
The reviews were announced earlier this year, after concerns were raised about nine deliveries at the hospital since 2023, including two stillbirths. Dr Martin Daly, from Fianna Fáil, doesn't want Portiuncula to lose its maternity services:
