The chairman of Fine Gael's parliamentary party is defending choosing Heather Humphreys as their presidential election candidate.
Mairead McGuinness was initially chosen but pulled out on health grounds.
Fine Gael councillor in Co Westmeath, John Dolan, believes McGuinness would have done better than Humphreys.
However Longford-Westmeath TD, Micheál Carrigy, is defending choosing the Monaghan woman as Fine Gael's candidate.
Deputy Carrigy also says the nomination system for presidential election candidates should be changed.
13 per cent of votes were spoiled in the election.
He believes votes were spoiled because people didn't support either of the two candidates.
You need 20 Oireachtas members or four councils to back you to get on the ballot paper - which the Fine Gael TD believes should be changed.
