A local councillor has raised the issue of a lack of qualified carers for the sick and elderly in Co. Leitrim.
Fianna Fáil councillor Paddy O'Rourke highlighted the problem in a recent Leitrim County Council meeting.
He says the unfavourable pay and work conditions of the job 'create the perfect storm' for people to be put off from joining the ranks of home carers.
A course for carers was initially being organised by Sligo-Leitrim ETB in conjunction with the HSE and the Department of Social Protection, but it did not meet the critical mass required to justify its offering.
