Local councillor calls for citizens' assembly to revamp presidential nomination process

You need the backing of 20 Oireachtas members or four councils to get on the ballot paper

A leading Fine Gael politician in Co Leitrim says a citizens' assembly should be set up to consider revamping the presidential nomination process.
Only two candidates were in the race this time - Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys and Independent Catherine Connolly.

You need the backing of 20 Oireachtas members or four councils to get on the ballot paper.

He says it was a big blow to Heather Humphreys when Fianna Fáil's Jim Gavin pulled out of the campaign.
